Johnny Depp explains how he picked his poison with the Mad Hatter

When he takes on a role, Johnny Depp often paints a watercolor portrait of the still-forming character to help find his face and personality. After putting the finishing touches on his painting for “Alice in Wonderland,” Depp looked down at the Mad Hatter staring back at him from the canvas and giggled.

“I was thinking,” the actor said, “‘Oh my God, this one will get me fired!’”

Movie Review: The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus

An excerpt from the review:

"But it is Depp who steals the show. He is too die for as the gigolo womanizer. Engaging and fun, there is more than a hint of Jack Sparrow with his playfulness both to his female companions and to the camera. The most energetic, dynamic and sexy of the incarnations of Tony, he draws you ever deeper into the mind maze. And fact that he is in a fantasy involving a never ending supply of stilettos is certainly a fantasy of most every woman out there."

The film is signature Gilliam, alive with color and fantasy and punctuated by flashes of psychedelic imagery...

The making of 'The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus'

New York (CNN) -- When you meet Terry Gilliam you get the feeling that you have known him all your life. Perhaps it's his easy way of communicating or his ever present laughter. When he arrived at CNN for our interview he confessed quite freely that he had consumed a few margaritas beforehand. That pleased me, since I figured Mr. Gilliam would be open to discuss anything in a more relaxed state.

Brando, Depp, the missing millions and Divine Rapture, the missing movie

...Back in 1995, Johnny Depp, Debra Winger, and Marlon Brando rolled into town to make a film called Divine Rapture. Ballycotton looked set to become an Irish landmark in the manner of Cong in County Mayo, which hosted John Wayne's The Quiet Man, or Dingle in Kerry, where David Lean filmed Ryan's Daughter. But there are no mementos or tourist memorabilia in Ballycotton because Divine Rapture was never completed: the production packed up and left with only two weeks of film in the can.

‘PEOPLE’ NAMES JOHNNY DEPP “SEXIEST MAN ALIVE” 2009

Part-Time Pirate, Full-Time Family Man Is First to Be Chosen Twice in One Decade: 2003, 2009

(NEW YORK) – The 2000s appear to be the “Sexiest” decade for Johnny Depp. In this week’s special double issue, PEOPLE magazine announces that the king of cool with the killer cheekbones is the “Sexiest Man Alive” 2009, inheriting the title from Hugh Jackman. Other sexy men in this elite club who have been twice-honored by PEOPLE are George Clooney (2006, 1997) and Brad Pitt (2000, 1995), but not in the same decade. Depp, who was also chosen PEOPLE’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2003, has the unique distinction of sharing that title alone.
Whether it's onscreen in roles like Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise or at home with his family on their private Bahamian island, the 46-year-old father of two with 25 years in show business still reigns as Hollywood's most irresistible iconoclast.
"Johnny Depp has magical powers. He's unlike anyone else," actress Isla Fisher tells PEOPLE. "He's funny, generous and clever. It's just a shame he's so hard on the eyes."
